Analysis of evolutionary relationships suggests that the ancient animal is more closely related to the uterus, but has many unique characteristics.
"Mukupirna nambensis was clearly an impressive and powerful animal, at least three times larger than the modern womb," said Dr. Robin Beck, a researcher at the University of Sulford. "He probably lived in an open forest environment without grass, and developed teeth that allowed him to feed on sedges, roots, and tubers that could dig him up with their powerful front legs."
"Mukupyrna nambensis has revealed a fascinating combination of characteristics and provides evidence of a close connection between the uterus and an extinct group called Williards," a scientist from the Department of Earth Sciences at the London Museum of Natural History, Dr. Said Pip Brewer. "It suggests that adaptation to food digging may be present in the earliest family members of the fetus and is likely to survive them to this day."
Although previously suggested, this test was not possible, as the oldest fossilized uterus is discovered only with teeth and some skull fragments. The team looked at how body shape evolved into vombatiforms, a group that includes Mukupyrna numbensis, wombats, koalas and their fossil relatives, and showed that they were at least six times body weight in the past 25 million years. 100 kg or more have been developed.
